Autumn in Wisconsin is truly special, with crisp air and vibrant, colorful leaves painting the landscape. The harvest season brings ripe seasonal favorites to the table as friends and family gather for tailgates and cozy home gatherings.
We're excited to share a chili recipe with a Wisconsin twist that includes sweet potatoes and bratwurst from Miesfeld's Triangle Market.
Bratwurst Chili with a Flavorful Twist
Bratwurst might not be the first meat you think of when you plan to make chili, but it works surprisingly well. It has a milder taste than popular chili meats like sausage and chorizo, and its spice profile adds a gentle sweetness and earthiness.
This recipe uses a traditional bratwurst from Miesfeld's Triangle Market. We recommend our Grand Champion bratwurst. If you want bold flavors and variety, try our Caveman, garlic, chicken, turkey, or beer butter and onion bratwurst.
Sweet potatoes also add sweet, nutty tones to chili. This recipe pairs them with tomatoes, tempering this sweetness with a gentle acidity that balances the dish. They respond well to mild spices, like the smoked paprika and cumin in this recipe.
Our chili is perfect for a slow cooker. Cook the bratwurst in a skillet on the stove or throw them on the grill for added flavor. Then, add it to the slow cooker with the other ingredients. Let it simmer for hours while you enjoy the game or relax with your favorite fall activity.
Here are the steps for making bratwurst chili with sweet potatoes.
1. In a large skillet, pan-fry the bratwurst pieces over medium heat until cooked through, about 9 to 10 minutes. Alternatively, grill the bratwurst over medium heat until browned and cooked through, then cut into pieces. Set the bratwurst aside. Set the bratwurst aside.
2. Spray a slow cooker with cooking spray (you may also coat the cooker with canola oil). Add bratwurst and all remaining ingredients except the optional toppings. Stir to combine.
3. Cover the pot and cook the chili on LOW for 6 hours. Check the taste during the last hour of cooking, and add salt and pepper as necessary.
4. Spoon the chili into bowls. Top with cheese, sour cream, cilantro, or crushed chips if desired.
Tips
We like the slow cooker for its ease of use, but if you prefer to make this chili in a Dutch oven or large pot, that works as well. Brown the bratwurst in a separate skillet first or grill them over medium heat until browned and cooked through.
Then, add a tablespoon of oil to your pot and sauté the onion until translucent. Next, add the remaining ingredients, including the cooked bratwurst. Let the chili simmer for at least an hour.
